Algeria to recognize apostille from 2026

Algeria to recognize apostille from 2026 16.09.2025

In 2025, Algeria took an important step towards facilitating international interaction by officially joining the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961, which abolishes the requirement of legalization for foreign public documents. This step opens the door to recognizing the apostille, a special stamp that certifies the authenticity of documents for use abroad.
Apostille for Algeria, advantages for document preparation:
Until now, citizens, companies and government agencies had to undergo a complex and lengthy procedure of double legalization: first at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and then at the consulate of the country where the document was to be used. With the accession to the Convention, this will change: one apostille will be enough for a document issued in one country to be recognized in another.
This innovation is of particular importance when preparing documents for use in Algeria:
• Students planning to study abroad (diplomas, statements with grades);
• Diaspora representatives preparing documents in other countries (archive documents, references);
• Businesses operating in international markets (statutes, statements);
• Citizens getting married, having children, or resolving legal issues outside Algeria (birth certificate, marriage certificate).
Apostille in Algeria will be in effect from 2026:
For its part, Algeria undertakes to recognize documents from other countries party to the Convention if they are affixed with an apostille. This means that foreign diplomas, certificates, references, judicial documents can be submitted to Algerian institutions without the need to undergo the consular legalization procedure.
There is no exact date for accession yet, the practical implementation of this mechanism at the legislative level is ongoing. It can be argued that in 2026 Algeria will officially join the simplification of the system of international document circulation, affixing the apostille stamp, making it faster and more accessible.
